Make sure you have downloaded the correct BIOS file and flashing utility. Requirements and Precautions You are flashing the BIOS at your own risk. So, figuring out which BIOS update utility you need to flash your BIOS is not that hard. Motherboard BIOS / Flash Update Utilities Most of the BIOS kernels were produced by Award Software, American Megatrends Inc. I'm trying to see if I can bring back this old HP desktop computer that I've had in my basement for awhile now, a little over 1 1/2 years due to an error that at the time I couldn't diagnose.Tags Related posts: Phoenix Award Bios Cmos Setup Utility Download I've tried experimenting with the computer by running a couple tests before creating this thread, I did not take the computer apart at all, here is what I know: I guess you could say we can bring him back, we have the technology, haha. When you boot up the computer and it gets past the part where it shows the HP logo and all the shortcuts to the tools, it will get stuck at the screen with the flashing underscore ( _ ) / the black screen. You can also notice a very subtle screen flash in the black area approximately every second. I can access the bios screen, so that immediately told me that this couldn't be an issue with the computer's motherboard, then again, there's always the possibility it still could be. I've went into the BIOs and I tried changing the boot order so that the DVD Drive booted before the HDD. I then proceeded to try to run multiple types of discs on it, this included Ubuntu, Seagate HDD Tester, and a System Repair disc. Unfortunately, it still brings me to that black screen of death with the underscore, it doesn't matter what disc I put in there. I then tried both the HDD and the DVD Drive, both brought me back to that black screen with the underscore. I finally tried running the diagnostics test by pressing F9, this ended up working, and ultimately I was finally able to figure out that when it ran a test on the HDD, it resulted in the following error (yes my old monitor has a red line down the middle, sorry about that): I've tried pressing F8/F11 to bring up the system restore/recovery menu, but that was ineffective, as this still brings me to that black screen with the underscore. So in conclusion I'm not sure what direction to take from here. This computer has some age, but I feel like it's a waste to just keep it nonoperational when I could get it working again and actually use it for something. One final note I would like to mention too is that preferably, if it comes down to me needing to get a brand new HDD, I would like to see if I can recover some files off of the computer if it's possible such as photos, music, documents, etc.Īlright so I tried unplugging that front USB port, I carefully disassembled the case only to discover that, holy crap, there was a lot of dust in there. I also noticed that it was rather busy in the front and that it wasn't very clear as to where the front USB was plugged in. So instead of messing around with that too much (I'd rather be safe than sorry), I found a port on the motherboard that was called F_USB1 (You'll see this port in one of the screenshots), I made the assumption that this was the front USB and disconnected it, then I twist tied it out of the way to another cord. I rebooted the computer after putting it back together as usual only to find that, you guessed it, it gets stuck at the black screen with the underscore again. This manual describes the Phoenix Technologies AwardBIOS Setup program. The Setup program lets you modify basic system configuration settings. The settings are then stored in a dedicated battery-backed memory, called CMOS RAM, that retains the information when the power is turned off.
